Directive for Phased Reopening of Churches, DOS, as applied to SJM, May 4, 2020

  • Using DOS social distancing requirements (an 8-0 halo around each attendee) we are allowed up to 25 people in the Nave of the sanctuary, 2 people in the Narthex- to act as Doorkeepers, 1 server and 2 celebrants in the altar, and one additional person in the vestry if need be.
  • Do not attend services if you have any symptoms of any kind, period, or if you have been in contact with someone COVID-19 positive in the last 14 days.
  • Clinicians who care for COVID-19 patients are not permitted to attend services, but family members may.

Attending Services

  • Preregistration: Because we are forced to limit attendance, all attendees must pre-register to attend. Please do not register for a service and then no-show.  It is not fair to others.  Attendance records will be kept for all services as a precaution for contact tracing.  Preregistration can be made at sign up genius or by calling the office during normal business hours (9a-3:30p, Tue, Wed, & Thur) and asking if the office can log on and register them while they await on the phone
  • Mask/Face covering Requirement: All attendees must wear a mask at all times. “ Set a guard over my mouth, O ” (Ps 141:3)
    • Officially designated choir members who may remove their mask when the service begins and must put them back on at the dismissal.
    • If you do not have a mask, contact the church office and we will try to make arrangements.
    • Children under 8 are not required to wear a mask/face covering.
  • Hand washing: Everyone must wash their hands immediately upon entering the Church in the Narthex restroom.  The narthex restroom has been transformed into a handwashing station.  The door will remain open at all times.
  • No Service Books/Handouts/Bulletins: Please bring a service book if you would like to follow the service.
  • The doors, the doors!: Because we cannot have any moving around once the services begin so the doors of the church will be closed 5 minutes before Liturgy begins so as to allow enough time for the last person to wash their hands and take their place.
  • Location, location, location: There is an 8-0 social distancing grid laid out on the floor.  Individuals must stand on “their space.”  Families may stand together.  This does not reduce overall attendance in the church.  We have placed socially distanced chairs along the perimeter for those who need seats..
  • “Be still, and know I am God” (Ps 46:10) Parents with children need to consider whether their child can be still enough to maintain social distancing during the full service. Also teens will be unable to leave the sanctuary.

Receiving Holy Communion

  • Maintain social distancing protocol: There are 6-0 apart stop bars on the floor as you approach the Chalice
  • When you arrive at the Chalice, remove mask/face covering, place the communion cloth under your chin, tilt head back and open mouth wide and the priest will “drop” the communion in your mouth.
  • If necessary, paper tissues will be available to wipe one’s mouth. The tissue must then be placed in marked receptable and will be burned following the service.
  • Until social distancing protocol is ended, there will be no handmaidens

SJM Divine Services Preregistration May 10-18, 2020

Guiding principles:

“When you are invited by anyone to a marriage feast, do not sit down in a place of honor, lest a more eminent man than you be invited by him; and he who invited you both will come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you will begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when your host comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher’; then you will be honored in the presence of all who sit at table with you. 11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”  (Lk 14:8-11)

“ The last shall be first, and the first last.” (Mt 20:16)

When I attended the OCA mission in Gainesville, we had no priest.  A priest came and served Liturgy on Saturday.  We were grateful.  In our household Saturday became Sunday.

Our goal is to be as evenhanded and equitable as possible to everyone.  Theoretically over this nine-day period 200 people will be able to attend services.

Signing up is on the honor system and will be done through SignUpGenius.  Links will be available on the SJM website under the News/Events tab.

24 hours after SignUpGenius goes live, the alphabetical restrictions and any preferences for people working Monday-Friday will be lifted, and you can sign up for whatever is open.

Please do not register for more than one Divine Liturgy

Please do not sign up more than one person per line on SignUpGenius or we will not be able to accommodate you.  In other words, a family of five takes five slots, a husband and wife two slots.  We are severely restricted in total attendance.

If you do not have access to the internet to log in and no one can help you to do this, please call the church office during normal business hours (Tue, Wed Thur, 9a-3p) and we will assist.
