Directive for Phased Reopening of Churches, DOS, as applied to SJM, May 4, 2020

  • Using DOS social distancing requirements (an 8-0 halo around each attendee) we are allowed up to 25 people in the Nave of the sanctuary, 2 people in the Narthex- to act as Doorkeepers, 1 server and 2 celebrants in the altar, and one additional person in the vestry if need be.
  • Do not attend services if you have any symptoms of any kind, period, or if you have been in contact with someone COVID-19 positive in the last 14 days.
  • Clinicians who care for COVID-19 patients are not permitted to attend services, but family members may.

Attending Services

  • Preregistration: Because we are forced to limit attendance, all attendees must pre-register to attend. Please do not register for a service and then no-show.  It is not fair to others.  Attendance records will be kept for all services as a precaution for contact tracing.  Preregistration can be made at sign up genius or by calling the office during normal business hours (9a-3:30p, Tue, Wed, & Thur) and asking if the office can log on and register them while they await on the phone
  • Mask/Face covering Requirement: All attendees must wear a mask at all times. “ Set a guard over my mouth, O ” (Ps 141:3)
    • Officially designated choir members who may remove their mask when the service begins and must put them back on at the dismissal.
    • If you do not have a mask, contact the church office and we will try to make arrangements.
    • Children under 8 are not required to wear a mask/face covering.
  • Hand washing: Everyone must wash their hands immediately upon entering the Church in the Narthex restroom.  The narthex restroom has been transformed into a handwashing station.  The door will remain open at all times.
  • No Service Books/Handouts/Bulletins: Please bring a service book if you would like to follow the service.
  • The doors, the doors!: Because we cannot have any moving around once the services begin so the doors of the church will be closed 5 minutes before Liturgy begins so as to allow enough time for the last person to wash their hands and take their place.
  • Location, location, location: There is an 8-0 social distancing grid laid out on the floor.  Individuals must stand on “their space.”  Families may stand together.  This does not reduce overall attendance in the church.  We have placed socially distanced chairs along the perimeter for those who need seats..
  • “Be still, and know I am God” (Ps 46:10) Parents with children need to consider whether their child can be still enough to maintain social distancing during the full service. Also teens will be unable to leave the sanctuary.

Receiving Holy Communion

  • Maintain social distancing protocol: There are 6-0 apart stop bars on the floor as you approach the Chalice
  • When you arrive at the Chalice, remove mask/face covering, place the communion cloth under your chin, tilt head back and open mouth wide and the priest will “drop” the communion into your mouth.
  • If necessary, paper tissues will be available to wipe one’s mouth. The tissue must then be placed in marked receptacle and will be burned following the service.
  • Until social distancing protocol is ended, there will be no handmaidens
